Welcome to Newmarket Open Door

Newmarket Open Door is a charity providing vulnerable people with supported housing and training opportunities in Newmarket. As well as our houses, we run two Charity Superstores and Training Centres in Newmarket and Mildenhall, the local Foodbank as well as the Community Recycling Centre, to fundraise and to support the wider community.

Newmarket Open Door

Open Door was inspired and founded by the local Churches Together initiative in 1997 and now manages and provides:

  • Portland and Hypher Houses – supported housing for young single homeless or vulnerable people aged 16-24.

  • The Charity Superstore and Training Centre retailing donated furniture and household goods to the general public, providing volunteering opportunities for our residents and disadvantaged people from the wider community.

  • The Foodbank@newmarketopendoor redistributes foods and household products to charities and their members and a discounted meal voucher scheme for homeless people in emergency need.

  • The Community Recycling Centre at Depot Road, formerly run by Suffolk County Council. This is now a 'Pay to Throw' site, taking in household waste for a fee and collecting materials such as metals, textiles and clothes, carboard and paper.

"Behold, I stand at the door and knock. If anyone hears My voice and opens the door, I will come in to him and eat with him, and he with Me". (Revelation 3:20)

Our normal opening hours are:

The Centre re-opened thanks to a grant from Suffolk County Council to support our insurance, environmental supervision and licence costs.

We apologise for any inconvenience but unfortunately due to high disposal costs and declining income from recyclate, we are compelled to continue to levy charges, which now include VAT.

We charge for landfill, green and wood waste, some metals and electrical items, especially fridges/freezers, to recoup the high disposal costs paid by the charity.

Cardboard, paper, books and most textiles are free.

Commercial rates available on request.

Congratulations to Gavin Smith, our site supervisor, in achieving a qualification in waste and resource management.

Alternative facilities are available at:

  • Mildenhall, off the A1065
  • Haverhill, off the A143, CB9 7UR
